MHI’s history has a decidedly family feel. In 1957, Edgar and Jeanette Sims opened the 12-room Royal Pine Motel in College Park, Maryland. Their vision was to provide guests with outstanding service in an impeccably maintained property.
As the family grew, so did Sims’ business vision. Well-managed expansion, opportunities for employees and community involvement were established as the cornerstones of their business strategy. These cornerstones support every aspect of MHI Hotels to this day.
Business cycles and inclusion of family drove progress, as MHI acquired new hotels and executed management contracts, repositioning distressed properties for sale. Expanding on their parents' vast knowledge and experience, Sims' sons, who quite literally were raised in the business, delved into the renovation and operation of a range of properties -- from limited service to upper upscale accommodations -- all leading to increased profitability of their own properties as well as those managed for investment partners and lending institutions.
In 2004, the Sims family assets were contributed to form MHI Hospitality Corporation, a publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), trading on NASDAQ under the symbol MDH. MHI Hotel Management was selected as the preferred management company to operate the MHI Hospitality Corporation portfolio.
Today, MHI continues to build upon its rich history of growth strategies for underperforming hotel assets, seeking new opportunities to enhance our portfolio while prudently increasing revenue.
