Bulgaria Comes To Wilmington!

By: Nancy Forester-HR Director-Hilton Wilmington

As our summer season came to a close, we were forced to bid farewell to five lovely young ladies from Bulgaria, who had so quickly and easily become part of our Hilton Wilmington family for the past four months.

Here on a Work Abroad Exchange ProgramDilyana, Dobra, Sylvia, Lora and Dobrina came to the United States from the University in Sophia to immerse themselves in American culture and to gain work experience in the USA.

While they were with us, they worked very hard in our housekeeping department, in addition to picking up extra shifts in the banquet department and in our  restaurant, Spencer's on the Riverwalk

The girls also took time to enjoy the beaches, shopping and excursions to New York City, Atlantic City, Washington, DC and Las Vegas.

In addition to their most impressive work ethic, their daily bright smiles and joyful attitudes are truly missed - we've even exchanged phone calls and e-mails with the girls since their departure.

Hopefully, they feel as though this was a positive experience for them - it certainly was for the team members of the Hilton Wilmington!

  An MHI Hero

"PHILADELPHIA -- An elderly man is fighting for his life after fire swept through his row home in West Philadelphia. The fire broke out Sunday afternoon on the 5800 block of Sansom Street. A neighbor ran into the burning home and pulled the 87-year-old to safety. He's in critical condition with burns over 50 percent of his body. The cause of the fire is under investigation."

This is a story published on-line on October 23, 2006 by NBC 10 in Philadelphia.  Hidden behind this story are two men, the man who is now fighting for his life and the person mentioned as saving him; our own Roland Williams, a nine-year team member at the Hilton Philadelphia Airport.

A True Hero: Roland Williams at work.

Roland is the AM Cook at the Landing Restaurant and Grill and has to awaken at 3:50 am each morning to be to work for his shift start at 5:00 am (understandably his least favorite part of his job!). He takes great pride in preparing meals that his customers enjoy.  General Manager Marty Faye states, "We are very pleased to have Roland on our team; he is one of our most reliable team members and is always available when needed."  Roland is also known for his consideration and kindness to fellow team members.

Roland has been married to his wife Denise for six years and has four children; Roland, Jr., Ken, Ebony and Jasmine.  We are sure they are especially proud of their husband and father.

On the day of the fire Roland was at home upset over the Philadelphia Eagles loss that day to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  He had just stepped outside, still in his bare feet, when he saw smoke billowing from his neighbors home across the street.  Roland's son and another neighbor kicked in the front door as Roland ran across the street.  He could here people yelling, "Grandpa, Grandpa!" so without further consideration Roland ran into the smoke and flame filled house. Thankfully he was able to quickly find his elderly neighbor and pulled him to safety.  His neighbor and friend is is now fighting for his life at The Temple University Burn Center.

When asked what prompted his heroic actions Roland replied, " I didn't think about it.  I just did it."   How many of us would be able to say the same?
